Job Search and The Older Worker

Job search for the older worker is a little different than for someone who is in their early 20’s or 30’s.  As a mature worker you bring skills and assets that they are unable to deliver.

When you are looking for a new job, it is important for you to believe that you’re going to get the job.  I have had many clients who tell me they are “too old”.  The thing is, if you think you’re too old and you won’t get it, then you won’t get it.  So why not tell yourself that you will get the job and think about the reasons why is a good fit for you.

Think about this question.  Why do you want the job you are applying to?

It is important to be excited about what you’re doing.  You must really want to do it, if you don’t, you won’t be able to convince the interviewer.  I am currently 72 and there are many jobs I look at and believe that I could do them and that I could be hired if I were to go for an interview.  I am confident that the skills and experience I bring are valuable, however since I am self-employed and can set my own hours I have decided that I don’t want to go back to working for someone else.

It is important that you believe that you have the skills and knowledge for the job you are applying for and that you believe you would be a valuable asset.  Don’t think of your age, think of your ability!    An older worker (a.k.a. mature worker) can be an employer’s greatest asset.
